Green kimberlite

kimberlite, also called blue ground, a dark-coloured, heavy, often altered and brecciated (fragmented), intrusive igneous rock that contains diamonds in its rock matrix. It has a porphyritic texture, with large, often rounded crystals (phenocrysts) surrounded by a fine-grained matrix (groundmass). It is a mica peridotite, and its most abundant mineral constituent is olivine.

Green kimberlite. Plants are green because of a pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs all colors of visible light except for green, which is reflected. Thus, the reflection of the green part of visible light is what causes plants to look green.

or more kimberlite bodies because kimberlite is the only primary bedrock source of diamonds. It has generally been presumed that drift diamonds in Wisconsin were carried to their discovery sites by glaciers that eroded them from the nearest known kimberlites in northern Ontario, 800 km (kilometers) (500 miles) or more away.

Kimberlites form this region do yield beautiful diamonds which mostly range from very small to a maximum of 3 carats. Recently, a kimberlite pipe, here named the Lake Ellen kimber lite, has been found in Iron County, Michigan. That find sug gests the possibility that drift diamonds in Wisconsin have come from a more local source--kimberlites in northern Michigan and Wisconsin. The Lake Ellen kimberlite is very poorly exposed, but aKöppen climate type: Located off Kentucky route 409. Dark blue-green kimberlite outcrops near Ison Creek (Clem Ison's farm).
